Statement
Campbell’s ever-shifting practice fluctuates between painting and sculpture. Her paintings have bodies like slithers of substance and her sculptures have hand-treated surfaces, as if slathered in stage make-up. Through a playful approach to materials, she cultivates a studio process that allows cultural ideas - frequently, but not limited to, those around gender and identity - to be deconstructed, chewed on and rearranged through a visual storytelling and retelling. When presented to an audience, such as in a gallery setting, her works often play up to the gaze of the spectator, sometimes showing off and becoming excessive.
